Bioproducts refers to a wide range of industrial and commercial products that today include electrical power, liquid fuels, shampoos, plastics and solvents.
What makes a product a bioproduct is the fact that it is derived from biological materials (living organisms and dead matter). Sometimes these materials are referred to collectively as biomass if they are available on a renewable or recurring basis. An important distinction to note is that although a product may be made from an organic material it does not necessarily mean that the process used to obtain or manufacture it is a renewable or sustainable one.
The current challenge being addressed by industry and research is to decrease our dependency on products derived from crude oil and other non-renewable resources by introducing new technologies and methods to produce the same or similar products from renewable resources such as biomass.
